Work, Work, Work… but Where, When, and How?
Covid brought massive change to employment, including where, when, and how people worked. With many employers wanting all their staff to return to the office at or near full time, pushback from employees isn’t uncommon. Many employees have resisted a full-time return, citing how a full return back to the office may be detrimental to both themselves and their employers.
🚗 As if he’s not in the news enough, Elon Musk recently asserted the importance of employees returning to work, claiming “Anyone who wishes to do remote work must be in the office for a minimum (and I mean *minimum*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla.”
⚡ While he did mention that exemptions would be considered, he did stress that for most cases, “If you don't show up, we will assume you have resigned.” In defense of his position, Musk added, "Tesla has and will create and actually manufacture the most exciting and meaningful products of any company on Earth. This will not happen by phoning it in."
🐦 This perspective comes at complete odds with the company Musk has recently struck a deal with, Twitter, which previously announced that employees may elect to work remotely forever if they’d like. In March of this year, Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal announced, “Wherever you feel most productive and creative is where you will work and that includes working from home full-time forever.” It will be interesting to see how this conflict of interest plays out once Elon Musk steps up to the plate.

Why it Matters
As you saw in our new TikTok series “How Many Hours Do You Work?” there is a range of work hours for many different jobs across many different industries. But even beyond that, it’s important for you as a job seeker to understand other components of employment schedules, from remote/in-office requirements, to travel requirements, to even (in some cases) weekend work requirements. You may love what employees do in your desired industry, but if the schedule isn’t a good fit, the job very likely won’t be either.
In Episode 18 of The Final Round podcast, former Bain & Company and McKinsey & Company Recruiting Lead Leah Frank discussed that while she loved her time working at both firms, she recalls waking up to as many as 300 emails while clocking in over 70 hours of work some weeks. Certain people are up for the challenge, while others may not. Nonetheless, work schedule is a primary concern job seekers should consider before applying to certain firms.
