Business Buzz
What’s going on in the world of recruiting, careers, job/internship searches, employment, and layoffs.
As Summer approaches and temperatures rise, the economy seems to be cooling down. High prices, high inflation rates, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine have many economists worried about the possibility of a recession. While a recession is uncertain, one thing is for sure: layoffs are here and plenty. Many companies, particularly startups, have recently laid off substantial percentages of their workforce.
📷 Cameo: The popular video sharing service, which connects celebrities with their fanbases, recently let go of 87 employees—a whopping 25% of their entire workforce.
🚘 Vroom: The NYC-based used car retailer laid off 270 workers, or 14% of its staff, earlier this month.
📉 Robinhood: Last month, the easy-to-use stock and cryptocurrency trading platform fired 340 employees, or nearly 10% of its total workforce.
🏠 Better.com: Layoffs for the mortgage lender startup continue, even just months after CEO Vishal Garg infamously fired 900 employees over Zoom. Since December, the company has reduced from 10,000 to only 5,000 employees.
🚗 Carvana: Even the fastest growing companies in an industry can downsize, and Carvana is no better example. Earlier this month, 2500 employees (12%) were laid off.

Question: I keep seeing companies implementing layoffs. What can I do to prepare for the worst?
-Amanda G.
This question is really important. No matter the job market, or no matter how secure you think your job may be, it’s always important to prepare for the worst. This starts with continuing to develop your professional network, regardless if you’ve been employed for years, recently hired, or unemployed and looking for a job.
In the very first episode of The Final Round Podcast, Talent Acquisition Senior Specialist at Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Bruce Smolen discussed the importance of networking not just when you need a job, but also when you don’t. He emphasizes how the best time to network is when you don’t need anything at all, as it allows you to build relationships that may help you when a change in your career is either desired or the opposite.
